Origin & Identity of Delizie De’Lizio

Delizie de’ Lizio:
Our History

Name, myth and olive

The name Lizio has ancient and Mediterranean origins. It comes from the Latin Lyctius or Lyctus, a translation of the Greek Lyktos (Λύκτος), one of the oldest Mycenaean cities on Crete, which was exposed to the winds and surrounded by fertile soil – a place where olives have been an integral part of the landscape for thousands of years. In Greek mythology, Lyktos was Idomeneus, a Cretan king and hero of the Iliad who came to southern Italy after the Trojan War, bringing with him people, knowledge, and the olive tree. Thus, the name Lizio, like the olive tree, crossed the Mediterranean, took root in Sicily, and over time preserved the deep connection between identity, Mediterranean products, and tradition.

The family history of Rosario Lizio

Incidentally, the name Lizio also appears in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and in a novella by Boccaccio, which further strengthens our connection to Italian culture and tradition.

Our family continues to live in close connection with nature and its products. In 1981, my father, Carmelo Lizio, decided to plant an olive grove on the slopes of Monte Judica, and all 340 olive trees were planted by my brother Francesco and me with our own hands. My sister Marina was also born that year, and we all grew up practically surrounded by olive trees.

My father passed on his knowledge to us and, as a hobby, he also looked after a few goats for milk and cheese production, while my mother, Michela Di Perna, baked bread from our own wheat and prepared all kinds of preserves. My son Dario also helps with the harvest whenever his studies allow. Thus, we are now in our third generation of continuing the culture of good olive oil and other Mediterranean specialties, as has been done in Crete for thousands of years. These activities represent our deep harmony with nature and our appreciation of genuine, traditional quality.

Delizie de' Lizio is the fruit of this heritage: an extra virgin olive oil that combines myth, tradition, and our family history, carrying on the passion for top quality and authenticity.
